About the Pen Designer/Turner
I have been a lifelong woodworker growing up in a family of construction workers, cabinet makers and other tradesmen. I have built/remodeled several homes, owned a cabinet shop, built custom furniture, still have a matting and framing business and now since "retirement" from 20 years as a Technology Sales and Marketing Specialist, I am focusing on designing and manufacturing hand made, custom crafted Writing Instruments. While various types of wood from local reclaimed sources and exotics from around the world are my major component, a number of "man made" materials such as acrylics, trustone and others are sources that provide some really unique design options.
My target audience is someone who is always searching for that unique, one of a kind gift idea that is both functional as well as outstandingly attractive. I tend to use very high quality components coupled with very focused attention to detail. I use a variety of finishing techniques that appeal to individual taste. The friction type finishes provide a range of appearance from a soft patina to high gloss depending on the type of wood. The have been widely used over the years by professional pen turners and hobbyists. Always looking for new approaches the pen shown below is an example of a finish that when done properly and carefully, provides a very high gloss along with unexcelled durability. I use multiple coats of CA glue over a smoothly finished wood. The result is a glass like finish that is not only exceptional in appearance but one that will stay that way!
